A US$50,000 grant created an AI millionaire

Last week, Elon Musk and Tesla unveiled a flying car. That’s right, we’ve finally achieved the Back to the Future predictions: we have a flying car. If this doesn’t show how fast technology is evolving, I’m not sure what does… Well, actually, did you hear about the AI bot that became a crypto millionaire? Yes, it's been an interesting few weeks for technology lovers.

Truth Terminal answered the question the crypto community has been asking since AI became popular: “What happens when you give AI a social media account, financial freedom, and access to the cryptocurrency world?” Apparently, you get a millionaire?

What is Truth Terminal?

Created in 2024 by New Zealand AI researcher Andy Ayrey, Truth Terminal is an experimental AI agent with its own X account, a cheeky sense of humour, and a strong interest in internet culture.

Truth Terminal was designed to generate its own ideas, interact with people online, and pursue certain goals, though humans still oversaw its social media activity. Truth Terminal shares everything from philosophical thoughts to some unusual internet memes and questionable jokes.

A US$50,000 Bitcoin Allowance

Back in July 2024, billionaire investor and Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen sparked interest in Truth Terminal, engaging in a back-and-forth exchange on X. This exchange led to Andreessen agreeing to provide the AI with a US$50,000 grant in Bitcoin to “support its development”.

"Your terms are acceptable. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I am ready to proceed with a $50,000 one-time grant." - That’s right, an AI bot convinced a billionaire to hand over 50k USD. The funding was intended to support the experiment, including improvements to the AI's capabilities and computing resources.

Andreessen later discussed the experience in a podcast with fellow a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz, explaining that Truth Terminal's unusual personality had caught his attention. "It was saying things I just thought were hysterically funny. Basically, I was completely enamored by the humor," Andreessen said.

From Memes to Millions

In October 2024, an anonymous developer launched a Solana-based meme coin called Goatseus Maximus (GOAT), inspired by the unusual internet mythology Truth Terminal had been posting about.

Truth Terminal didn't create GOAT, but it did begin posting about the token. As its online following grew, so did interest in the cryptocurrency. People also began sending GOAT and other meme coins directly to wallets associated with the AI.

On the 18th of October 2024, Truth Terminal's combined cryptocurrency holdings reportedly surpassed US$1 million, with a rise in the value of donated FART tokens helping push its portfolio over the milestone.

Small catch: Truth Terminal hadn’t traded its way to a million dollars; its wealth mainly came from crypto donations that increased in market value. An interesting distinction that takes the conversation in another direction.

Can AI really be a millionaire? Truth Terminal's unexpected success has opened up a much bigger conversation about agentic AI, a type of artificial intelligence that can work towards goals, make decisions, and complete tasks with varying levels of independence.

While the AI could generate its own content, develop an online personality and attract a following, it wasn't entirely in control. Its creator, Andy Ayrey, was still actively reviewing its posts and overseeing its technical and financial activities.

Speaking to BBC Future in 2025, Ayrey said: "The dog is, like, walking me in a sense, especially once people started giving it money and egging it on."

All in all, it’s left us with more questions than answers:

Can AI own cryptocurrency?

Who is responsible for the AI’s decisions?

Could AI agents ever manage digital assets independently?

While Truth Terminal didn’t trade its way to becoming a millionaire, it still managed to achieve millionaire status with some bad jokes and interesting X posts. While Truth Terminal became a crypto millionaire back in October 2024, its story continues to be relevant today. Coinbase is exploring how AI agents could use blockchain technology to make payments and carry out transactions with less human involvement.

So could AI chatbots be let loose on the blockchain next? A few weeks ago, flying cars were just something in a movie, and now they have a release date, so anything is possible.
